Our 3-part series, Senior Medication Management, continues with a focus on ensuring the right person get the right medication and what medication coverage Medicaid offer.

Senior Medication Management and what does Medicaid Cover

If you’re looking for support around medications, you may be excited to hear about Medicaid coverage for senior medication management. After all, keeping track of medications can get harder for people as they age. If you’ve worked with a loved one who has forgotten a medication, taken the wrong medication, or taken a medication at the wrong time, then you know how stressful and worrisome this can be.

Medicaid may be able to help you out. If your loved one is in an assisted living facility like Dayspring Villa, they may qualify for coverage that allows them to have someone help them with their medication.

What is Senior Medication Management in Assisted Living?

It means ensuring that the right person gets the right medication at the right dose. It also involves timing medications properly and ensuring that people get them the right way, whether that’s liquid form, a pill, or through an IV.

At Dayspring Villa, we have people and processes in place to make sure this happens. Our plan includes:

  • An individualized medication plan for each resident. We will take the time to understand what medications your loved one needs and all the details around them. Our plan takes into account all of their unique health needs and includes collaboration with your loved one to make sure the plan works for them.
  • Crystal clear communication. We want to communicate with your loved one, with you, and with their doctors to ensure we always get their medications correct the first time. Additionally, if your loved one is struggling with their mediations, we’ll let you and the doctor know that, too.
  • Training and oversight focused on medications. Our care team involves both individual members with training around medication management as well as supervision that specifically focuses on medications. We ensure that there is always someone available who knows your loved ones’ medications well and who is willing to help them take them whenever possible.
  • Partnering with you. We know that you are a key player when it comes to your loved one’s healthcare, and we’ll work with you on medication management. If you have questions or concerns, we want to hear them. We’ll bring ours to you as well, so we can collaborate for your loved one’s continued health and well being.

If your loved one needs help simplifying their medication management, our dedicated team at Dayspring Villa is there for them. You can reach out to us at any time to make sure they are getting the help they need.

Medicaid Senior Medication Management

Dayspring Villa Assisted Living Community in Denver, CO - dayspring villa colorful pills and capsulesIf your loved one is on Medicaid, they may qualify for medication management services through their assisted living waiver. However, this may vary by state, since each state manages its own Medicaid program.

In Colorado, where Dayspring Villa is located, you’ll need to apply for the Elderly, Blind, and Disabled waiver to get assisted living costs covered. There can be a waiting list for this waiver, so you and your loved one may need to find an alternative plan until they can get coverage. Once they have the waiver, medication management is one of the services that it can be used to cover.

In order to qualify for a waiver, your loved one will have to qualify in two categories. These are:

  • Seniors have to have both income and assets below a certain level to get Medicaid. This level can change because it’s based on a rate set by the federal government, so you should look into this before applying.
  • Older adults must also show that they need help with some of the activities associated with daily living. They will likely need to be assessed on a functional basis by a healthcare worker hired by Medicaid.
